Skincare for Every Decade!

The secret to get the best skin of your life, for the rest of your life

Skincare for every decade by Kim Schlais

Are you wondering how to best care for your skin in each decade of your life? We feel your pain!! With so much information to sort through, how do you even know where to begin?? I’m walking you through Estetica’s general recommendations of what to do in your twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and beyond to keep your skin looking its best.

Skincare for your 20’s

We highly recommend monthly facials or HydraFacials to help keep those pores clean and skin well exfoliated. But the number one rule is to wear your sunscreen!!!!! Sun damage accounts for more than 90% of your skin’s aging. If you do nothing else during this decade, at least wear your sunscreen. If you haven’t already started with a professional grade skincare regimen, you absolutely should and use it every day, wash your face and apply your products morning and night. Once you start this habit, it only only takes a few minutes, it can be very fast.

We are also seeing a lot of 20-somethings getting Botox for prevention of wrinkles. I wish I had this option when I was in my twenties. Along with your facials or HydraFacial, you should consider a few microneedling treatments each year to stimulate cell turnover and collagen banking. It will also smooth out any texture issues

It is VITAL to use a vitamin C serum during this decade for brightening and protecting the skin against toxins. Again, get it from a reputable source, an aesthetician or dermatologist. So you know, the quality and will have enough of an active ingredient to actually work. This should be disclosed as well on the box. Reach out to us for a skincare consultation if you’d like help figuring out the right vitamin C dosage in your products.

RECAP…. for your twenties

  •  Botox for prevention
  • Regular facials
  • Maybe a little microneedling.
  • Home care with vitamin C and SPF

Skincare for your 30’s

In your thirties, you might start to see some early signs of aging, such as fine lines around the eyes or  between the brows. Discolorations might start to show up, as well. Botox is a great option to smooth lines and filler to restore lost volume in the lips or cheeks.

Remember this can look totally natural. It does not have to be over the top on the lips. We prefer a natural lip here at Estetica Spa in Longview. Three to six IPL laser treatments and  microneedling sessions ANNUALLY during your 30’s will speed up collagen production and reverse some of the damage done in the prior decades. Regular monthly treatment facials or HydraFacials are always recommended during every decade, as well as medical grade skincare at home. Make sure there is a retinol product in your daily regimen. It’s not optional anymore after you’re in your thirties, you need to be using a retinol. Don’t forget about checking the percentage, get with your esthetician or dermatologist to know what that is. SPF is your BFF!

RECAP for your thirties….

  • Botox
  • Filler
  • Regular facials
  • Microneedling
  • Home care with retinol + SPF.

Retinol Tips:

Any good medical grade skincare will disclose the percentage of retinol. We generally like to start our clients at a lower percentage and acclimate up to a higher percentage. So you might start on a 0.2, 5%, and then move up to a 0.5 and up as high as a 1% and then onto a 3%.

Skincare for your 40’s

In your 40’s you may start to see some fine lines, laxity, volume loss in the lips, dull skin and sun damage. Dull skin may be caused by a lack of moisture or a buildup of dead skin cells, or even hormonal changes that are happening. I highly recommend a neurotoxin like Botox as well as filler if you’re starting to see some volume loss or fine lines. Additionally three to six IPL or laser treatments and microneedling sessions on a yearly basis. These treatments will speed up collagen production and reverse some of the damage done in the decades prior. We love to see regular monthly facials or HydraFacials for those that are 40+… your skin will love you as well.

Make sure you’re using a medical grade skincare at home with retinol in it, and yes, anyone 30 and over should be using a retinol! Don’t just grab one off the shelf at the big box store, see my retinol recommendations above. And, of course, always use your SPF every day, even if the sun’s not shining.

RECAP for your forties…

  • Botox
  • Filler
  • Regular facials and/or HydraFacials
  • Laser and/or Microneedling sessions
  • A good home care with retinol and SPF. (By good, I mean MEDICAL GRADE!)

Skincare for your 50’s

Generally, this is the time when we start really noticing the aging setting in. Those years of not taking care of our skin and sun damage really start to show after we hit 50. And often women in this age group start to notice the aging process of the neck and chest along with their face. So may want to include this area in your treatments, too.

The first thing we usually recommend is a neurotoxin like Botox and adding in dermal fillers. These remain an important part of the arsenal during this decade. Filler can help laser treatments work that much better, while still looking natural and restoring volume loss.

We LOVE laser treatments like IPL and Tixel for 50+ and microneedling during this decade to help with collagen production. Regular monthly treatment facials, or HydraFacials to keep that skin bright and exfoliate the dead skin cells. Medical grade skincare is a MUST for 50+, some ingredients that are necessary in this are vitamin A, retinol and SPF every day. Even when the sun’s not shining WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN!!

Recap for your fifties….

  • Botox
  • Fillers
  • Regular facials and HydraFacial
  • Laser treatments like IPL or Tixel
  • Medical grade skincare at home with retinol, vitamin A and SPF.

Skincare for your 60’s

When advanced aging skin laxity, deeper wrinkles and volume loss are seen, we got your back! I get asked all the time… ‘Is there anything I can do?’ The answer is yes, but we all must be realistic in our expectations.

We can’t turn back 40 years, but we certainly can help reverse and correct some of the signs of aging. Something small that can really help is a little cheek filler in the mid face area and a little filler in the lips. Believe it or not, cheek filler is to lift the sagging jowls and your top lip starts to slip away in your fifties. Just that little change can make a huge difference!! We like to do filler in a subtle way just to keep it looking natural.

Generally we are going to recommend some lasers, chemical peels, and microneedling  treatments to accelerate the collagen production. These will also fade age spots, soften lines, and tighten skin. Monthly treatment facials or HydraFacials to keep the skin bright and remove dead skin cells. Also possibly might recommend a neurotoxin like Botox in additional to a medical grade skin care regimen with retinol, vitamin A and SPF!

If we hear expectations that are above what we might be able to achieve, we’ll recommend a plastic surgeon for a surgical face lift.

RECAP for your sixties…

  • Botox
  • Filler
  • Tixel
  • Lasers + Microneedling
  • Medical grade skincare with retinol and SPF!
