Who’s a candidate for SkinPen? 

Most people are candidates for SkinPen. SkinPen doesn’t cause changes in pigmentation that may be seen with other energy devices, so it can be used on all skin types and tones, including darker skin that’s more susceptible to hyperpigmentation.

How long does it take and will it hurt?

The SkinPen procedure typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. Based on your needs, your SkinPen provider may apply a topical anesthetic to the skin prior to micro-needling. The topical numbing agent makes the SkinPen procedure comfortable and relatively pain-free. Most people report feeling just the slight vibration of SkinPen during the procedure. Ask your doctor what they do to ensure patient comfort during micro-needling. In one study of micro-needling used to treat acne scars, the patients’ average pain rating was only 1.08 out of 10. For most people, that’s probably less painful than having your eyebrows waxed.

How many procedures are recommended?

The number of SkinPen procedures required will be determined by your skin care professional based upon your individual goals and the health of your skin. Your clinician will recommend a course of procedures (typically three to six) appropriate for your skin’s needs and request you return within four to six weeks for your next procedure to ensure optimal results. While multiple sessions are recommended to achieve optimal micro-needling results, you may see noticeable improvements just one week following the procedure. Your skin will gradually improve as your body’s healing process promotes collagen remodeling.

Most patients receive a series of three SkinPen procedures spaced about four weeks apart. Your provider will develop a procedure plan specific to you.

What are the side effects and downtime*? 

The total healing time depends on each individual. Most patients have some slight swelling and redness/pinkness (like a mild to moderate sunburn) for two to four days following the micro-needling procedure. Some people may heal completely in 24 hours.

Your clinician may apply Skinfuse RESCUE Calming Complex immediately post-procedure to soothe your skin and reduce inflammation. RESCUE was formulated by Bellus Medical as part of the Skinfuse post-procedure protocol specifically to calm the skin following the SkinPen micro-needling procedure. Most people can return to their normal activities and conceal any side effects with makeup just one day after their SkinPen procedure.

Do I need to use a certain product line after the SkinPen procedure?

While the micro-channels are open in the 24 hours following your micro-needling procedure, it’s particularly important not to use skincare products that contain ingredients that will irritate your skin or hinder the skin rejuvenation process. You don’t want irritating ingredients to prolong inflammation of your skin following the SkinPen procedure.

What happens when applying RF to the skin?

By applying RF energy to the human body/skin which can conduct current and therefore act as part of the electrical circuit, any resistance encountered by the energy flow will cause heat to be produced at the site of maximum resistance, which can also be used to cut or coagulate tissue.
